The aim of the Scientific Commission on Sustainability Management is to research corporations as objects of experience and design in their economic, social, and ecological dimensions. Due to its cross-cutting nature, sustainability management is a highly dimensional construct that presents itself to the observer in a multifaceted and diverse manner. The Commission members strive in particular to integrate differentiated perspectives in theory and practice in order to arrive at shared objectives and statements through an objective understanding.
With this self-image in mind, the Commission, which sees itself as an interdisciplinary discussion forum, aims to contribute to the research of corporations in their relationship to the ecological environment as objects of experience, in order to gain insights for the formulation of empirically sound business administration theories, from which suitable design principles and measures can, in turn, be derived. The overarching nature of sustainability issues in business administration also presents the Commission with the task of fulfilling cross-cutting functions in its relationships with other Commissions within the association.

The members of the Scientific Commission on Sustainability Management coordinate and network their teaching and research activities in the field of corporate environmental management and sustainable business practices. These teaching and research activities focus on the management of the effective and efficient use of natural resources by corporations, taking into account the ecological requirements for maintaining natural cycles, as well as socially responsible and economically successful long-term corporate management.
This specific management function is examined both in relation to fundamental business functions (sustainable controlling, sustainable marketing, sustainable production management, etc.) and from an integrative and also epistemological perspective. The work of the Commission is therefore related to the topics of the other Scientific Commissions in the VHB, as well as related in an interdisciplinary manner to the social sciences, engineering sciences and natural sciences.
