Who is Who in VHB ProDok
Meet the lecturers of the VHB ProDok programme
Markus C. Arnold is a professor of managerial accounting and Director of the Institute of Management Accounting and Control at the University of Bern. His research has been published in The Accounting Review, Contemporary Accounting Research, Accounting, Organisations and Society, and Management Science, to name a few. He is the editor of Behavioural Research in Accounting (BRIA) and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Management Accounting Research.
What fascinates you about Experimental Accounting Research?
I am fascinated by experimental accounting research because it allows us to systematically examine how people behave when making financial decisions. Using controlled experiments, we can identify and analyse the psychological and economic factors that influence human decision making. This provides valuable insight into the incentives and biases that influence decisions, as well as the decision-making mechanisms themselves.
What challenges and opportunities do you think early-career researchers face?
One of the particular challenges facing young researchers is the increasing pressure to publish in such a competitive environment. However, international collaboration, new research questions and instruments also present significant opportunities. Those who establish a strong network and pursue innovative research early on can prepare themselves very well for the job market and set themselves up for a career.
What inspires you?
My sources of inspiration can be very diverse. For instance, I may be inspired by a keynote at a conference, in conversations with other researchers, when preparing for courses, or in discussions with people in the field. I am basically always inspired when I encounter problems for which I do not have a good solution based on my existing knowledge. The more you know, the more often this happens.
And what else?
The best courses to teach are always those in which participants are intrinsically interested in and eager to understand the content. The VHB ProDok courses are undoubtedly among them. It is particularly motivating when participants gain a new perspective on things and take something valuable away with them.
Markus Arnold teaches the ProDok course Advanced Topics in Experimental Accounting Research.
Who is Who - About this campaign
VHB ProDok lecturers are distinguished by their strong research skills, internationally recognised expertise and high level of professional commitment. Most of them have been involved in the ProDok programme for many years. As part of the 'Who's Who' campaign, they share insights into their personal motivations and what participants can expect from their courses in short interviews.
The campaign aims to demonstrate that VHB ProDok offers much more than just a course programme. It is a network of dedicated scientists from the German-speaking region and beyond who prioritise sound research, methodological quality and collaborative exchange.
